Good day everyone! In this blog we’re going to talk about some uncommon Filipino words.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word “Salumpuwit”?

Makaluma. Pang matanda. Uncommon.

But did you know that salumpuwit means chair?

Amazing isn’t? Did you know that?

Today we’re going to share with you the other uncommon Filipino words that you can use in your conversation.

1. Filipino word: HIRAYA

English translation: fantasy

Definition: This is an ancient Filipino word which means “the fruit of one’s dreams, wishes and aspirations.” Hiraya is often used in one’s wish to someone, Hiraya Manawari! It means May your dreams come true! May your wishes be fulfilled!

Sentence: Oras na para gumising ka na sa iyong HIRAYA at harapin ang katotohanan.


2. Filipino word: MARAHUYO

English translation: to be enchanted

Definition: Marahuyo is an ancient Filipino word that not only means to be enchanted, it is in itself considered by writers, poets, and artists to be one of the most beautiful Filipino words in all of Philippine literature.

Sentence: Maganda gamitin ang Noli Me Tangere upang MARAHUYO Ang kabataan sa pagbabasa ng ating literatura.



3. Filipino word: ILAYA

English translation: farm

Definition: An area of land that is devoted primarily to agricultural processes with the primary objective of producing food and other crops; it is the basic facility in food production.

Sentence: May isang malawak na ILAYA sa dulo ng bayang ito.



4. Filipino word: DAYANG

English translation: noble lady

Definition: A “dayang” is a darling. It could also be used for a princess or a noble lady.

Sentence: Mga DAYANG ang paborito kong karakter sa mga nobela.



5. Filipino word: ANTIPARA

English translation: eyeglasses

Definition: Are devices consisting of glass or hard plastic lenses mounted in a frame that holds them in front of a person’s eyes.

Sentence: Kailangan ko na atang magpalit ng ANTIPARA.


6. Filipino word: SAPANTAHA

English translation: gut feeling

Definition: An immediate or basic feeling or reaction without a logical rational.

Sentence: Mayroon akong SAPANTAHA na late nanaman si Samantha sa ating pagpupulong.



7. Filipino word: ULAYAW

English translation: companion

Definition: “Ulayaw” is the noun used to describe an intimate companion. This doesn’t have to be a romantic partner but can also describe an intimate friend.

Sentence: Hindi na ikaw ang aking ULAYAW magmula noong tinraydor mo ako.


8. Filipino word: ANLUWAGE

English translation: carpenter

Definition: A person whose job is to make or fix wooden objects or wooden parts of buildings.

Sentence: Hindi ba’t minsan mo na ring pinangarap maging ANLUWAGE?



9. Filipino word: ALIMUSOM

English translation: sweet scent

Definition: A sweet or delicate odor.

Sentence: Amoy ALIMUSOM ang iyong pabango.



10. Filipino word: BUTSAKA

English translation: small bag

Definition: A small bag sewn into or on clothing so as to form part of it, used for carrying small articles.

Sentence: Bilhin mo na itong BUTSAKA KO, mura lang naman ito.
